Outdoor Learning in Hot Weather: A Cooler Way to Teach
By mid-morning the radiators of trapped heat have already taken over. The blinds are down, the windows are open but moving nothing, and twenty-eight children are slumped over worksheets in a room that feels like the inside of a parked car. Somebody asks, again, if they can get a drink. The thermometer on the wall reads well past the point where anyone is really learning.
It is a scene playing out in thousands of UK schools every summer now. During this summer’s heatwaves, teachers have reported classroom temperatures ranging from 25°C to a staggering 38°C — far above the 26°C maximum the National Education Union recommends, and well beyond the threshold at which children can comfortably concentrate. Many of our school buildings were designed decades ago, with little thought for solar gain or prolonged high temperatures, and they are simply not built for the summers we now get.
The counter-intuitive part is this: when the indoors becomes an oven, the genuinely cooler, calmer, more workable place to learn is often outside — provided it is shaded, ventilated and properly set up. Outdoor learning in hot weather is not a reckless idea to be avoided until autumn. Done well, it is one of the most practical tools a school has for keeping children safe, comfortable and engaged when the mercury climbs.
Why hot classrooms quietly sabotage learning
We tend to treat heat as a comfort issue. The research says it is an achievement issue.
A landmark Harvard and NBER study of more than ten million PSAT takers found that for every 1°F rise in average temperature across a school year, learning outcomes fell by roughly 1%. A separate analysis of 4.5 million New York exam scripts found students performed measurably worse on a 90°F day than a 72°F one — and were even less likely to graduate on time after sitting exams in the heat. Earlier classroom trials showed children’s performance on numeracy and language tasks improving significantly when room temperature was lowered from 25°C to 20°C.
The mechanism is not mysterious. When a child feels “warm” or “hot,” vigilance drops, reaction times slow, and memory and recall tasks suffer. Crucially, the impact is not shared equally: studies in Japan and elsewhere show that disadvantaged pupils lose far more ground in the heat than their peers, widening gaps that schools work hard all year to close.
So the question is not really “should we risk going outside in the heat?” It is “can we afford to keep teaching in rooms that are demonstrably suppressing how well children think?”
Shade changes everything
The instinct during a heatwave is to keep children in. But the UK Health Security Agency’s own guidance points the other way more often than people assume: when outdoors, children should stay in the shade, wear loose, light clothing and wide-brimmed hats, and keep hydrated. The operative word is shade — not indoors.
A shaded outdoor space behaves very differently from a sunbaked playground or a stuffy classroom. Air moves through it. There is no glass amplifying the sun or trapping the warmth that thirty bodies generate. Under a canopy, with a through-breeze, temperatures can sit noticeably below those of a south-facing classroom by early afternoon. The difference between “outside in full sun” and “outside in dappled, ventilated shade” is the difference between a health risk and a refuge.
This is exactly why shaded structures — from sails to purpose-built outdoor classrooms — have moved up the agenda for UK schools. The ones that work best are not improvised. They offer genuine UV protection, real airflow, and a defined, calm space that signals to children that this is somewhere to settle and learn, not just somewhere to run around.
Teaching outside in a heatwave: a practical playbook
Outdoor learning in hot weather only works if it is planned rather than improvised. A few principles make it safe and genuinely useful:
Time it with the sun
Front-load outdoor sessions into the morning, when temperatures are lower and UV is climbing but not yet at its peak. Reserve the hottest part of the day — roughly 11am to 3pm — for shaded, low-exertion activities or for being indoors if your only outdoor option is unshaded. The goal is to teach with the day’s rhythm, not against it.
Lower the physical intensity, not the ambition
Heat is not the moment for a cross-country dash. It is, however, a perfect moment for the kind of slow, absorbing, sensory work that outdoor settings do better than any classroom: observational drawing in the shade, nature journaling, pond-dipping, storytelling circles, measuring and recording temperature across the grounds as a real-world data lesson, or quiet reading on cushions under a canopy. Cognitively rich, physically gentle.
Make hydration and sun protection routine, not reactive
Water bottles within arm’s reach and refilled often. Hats on before you step out, not after. Light, loose clothing. A named shaded “base” children know they can return to whenever they need to cool down. When these become habits rather than reminders, the whole session relaxes.
Use heat as the curriculum
Some of the best hot-weather lessons are about the heat. Why is the shade cooler? Where does the breeze come from? Which surfaces absorb the sun and which reflect it? How do animals and plants cope? A heatwave is an inconvenient thing to endure indoors and a remarkable thing to investigate outdoors — turning a disruption into the most memorable science of the term.
Watch the children, not just the thermometer
Flushed faces, unusual tiredness, irritability and headaches are early signs a child is struggling. Younger children and those with SEND or certain medical needs may feel the heat sooner and say so later, so keep groups small enough to notice, and build in more rest and water than you think you need.
The bigger shift: designing for the summers we actually have
This summer is not an anomaly to wait out; it is a preview. The UK’s climate is trending towards longer, hotter spells, and the estate of ageing school buildings was never designed for it. Retrofitting air conditioning across the country is neither quick nor, for most schools, affordable.

Outdoor learning in hot weather, planned with shade, timing and good sense, lets children breathe, move, think and stay curious when the classroom can offer none of those things. It protects the pupils who lose the most ground in the heat. And it nudges schools towards a longer-term truth: the best learning environments are the ones that work with the weather, in every season, rather than fighting a losing battle against it.
