Outdoor Classrooms in the North East
The North East has a relationship with weather that few other English regions match. Wind off the North Sea, long winters that come early and stay late, the rain shadow of the Pennines and the open exposure of the Northumberland coast — these are exactly the conditions that make a permanent, all-weather outdoor classroom worth the conversation. A canvas pop-up doesn't survive a Northumberland winter. A timber tipi, sealed and maintained, does.
Beehive Tipis works with nurseries and pre-schools, independent and preparatory schools, state schools, SEND and alternative provision, and forest schools across the region — from Tyneside city primaries to Cheviot-edge village schools. Our home is in the North West, but the fully managed model travels: installation, monthly inspection, year-round maintenance and four seasonal transformations are coordinated wherever you are, with no postcode out of scope.
If you're a head, business manager or EYFS lead in Newcastle, Durham, Sunderland or anywhere out to Berwick, the rest of this page is for you. If you're outside the North East, we still come to you — see the nationwide note further down.
Counties and areas we cover in the North East
The North East is compact compared with most English regions, but it carries an enormous range of school contexts inside it. Tyneside urban density, the post-industrial belts of Wearside and Teesside, the upland villages of Northumberland, the historic city of Durham, and a coastline that runs unbroken from Berwick to Saltburn. The managed model fits every one of those contexts.
Tyne and Wear
Newcastle upon Tyne, Sunderland, Gateshead, North Tyneside (including Whitley Bay), South Tyneside. Inner-city primaries, suburban juniors, and EYFS settings working with limited outdoor footprint — the tipi gives them a permanent, weather-proof outside on grounds that often have nowhere else for one.
County Durham
Durham, Darlington, Stockton-on-Tees, Middlesbrough, Bishop Auckland, Consett. Cathedral-city prep schools, market-town primaries and rural village schools sit inside one local authority footprint — and the same managed service applies to all of them.
Northumberland
Hexham, Alnwick, Berwick-upon-Tweed, Morpeth, Cramlington, Ashington. From the Tyne valley up to the Cheviots and the Border, this is one of England's most rural counties and one with a deep tradition of outdoor education. The all-weather build is the difference between a covered space that works in February and one that doesn't.
Travel and logistics are part of the managed fee. There is no extra charge for being further out — the service is the same in Berwick as it is in Gateshead, and our maintenance team plans monthly visits regionally rather than per-site.
Coastal weather, upland weather, and the case for permanent shelter
Outdoor learning in the North East has a strong, established tradition — the North York Moors, the Cheviots and Kielder Forest are part of how generations of children in this region have learned about the outdoors. The constraint has always been weather. A reception class can't reliably run a forest school session in November on the Northumberland coast without somewhere covered to gather, eat and warm up. A Year 6 outdoor lesson in February in upper Wearside needs more than a gazebo.
The Beehive build addresses that directly. A sealed timber roof, all-weather flooring, ventilation that works in summer and a closed envelope that holds heat in winter — that's the engineering. The managed service then takes care of the structure year-round: our team is on site every month, in person, not at the end of an email. We're on call at short notice for anything you need. The school never has to think about it.
What the managed service includes
- Site survey, design and installation — fully project-managed end to end
- Monthly in-person on-site visits — never just an email, always on call at short notice
- Ongoing maintenance: repairs, weather damage, wear and tear
- Four seasonal transformations a year — interior set, layout and learning props refreshed each term
- Compliance documentation: Ofsted-ready, ISI-ready, with risk assessments and method statements
- Staff training on safe use, daily setup and emergency procedures
- Fully insured — our cover sits behind the structure (you may still want to inform your own insurer for completeness)
- No capital outlay — a single monthly fee covers everything
Settings we work with
Nurseries and pre-schools. EYFS-aligned spaces for play-based outdoor learning — somewhere children can be outside on a wet Tuesday in February as easily as a dry morning in May. See our nurseries page →
Independent and preparatory schools. A calm, quietly distinctive outdoor classroom that fits the aesthetic of independent settings without a capital project — useful for ISI character-development strands and parent-facing storytelling alike. See our prep schools page →
State schools. Primaries, juniors and secondaries across the region — the managed model fits operational budgets without a capital project, procurement-friendly and Ofsted-ready from day one. See our state schools page →
SEND and alternative provision. Sensory-regulated, low-stimulation outdoor environments — predictable, consistent, and outside the four-walls dynamic that doesn't always work for every child. See our SEND page →
Forest schools. Covered, all-weather basecamps for forest school programmes — the gather, eat, regroup, warm-up space that turns a wet-weather session from a cancellation into a normal day. See our forest school shelters page →
